Law School

The Law School of the Institute of Economics, Management and Law has existed for over 15 years in the Russian State University  for the Humanities. It trains specialists on the basis of educational standards and European educational programs. Methods of teaching are founded on the best scientific and educational traditions.

Our conception of  language teaching has a communication-focused and profession-directed character. Our main objective is acquisition of communicative competence.

Linguistic training at the Law School takes into account needs, interests and personal inclinations of students. Every student is a full participant in the teaching process, which is based on the principles of close cooperation with the teacher. The goal is to develop the student’s independence, creativity and personal responsibility.

Independent studies improve the quality of knowledge, stimulates class work, leaving, as a result, a better educational imprint of the subject.

Our objective is to form the ability to speak English freely. The achievement of this goal is realized through going beyond the scope of the Legal English by broadening their educational, cultural and general linguistic horizons.

Lecturers in English of the Law Department are all experienced specialists. All of them carry out research work in the sphere of linguistic pedagogy.

Law students are tested in their first year. After the placement test each is assigned a language subgroups in accordance with their competence

The syllabus of the course «Law English» (composed by Dr. Nesterenko) satisfies the state requirements for the major «Law» and supplements them by taking into account the modern educational trends.

The curriculum of the course is aimed at improving the students’ skills in listening, reading, speaking, writing in English and translating from English into Russian and vice versa. Considering that nowadays the youth need to be reasonably good at English for their work, the communicative way of studying foreign language is the most effective and promising method. Linguistic skills acquired at the University let the students successfully use the language in their professional practice.

Much attention is given to legal vocabulary of modern English. The students of law are expected to give professional talks and presentation in English. The students work on, compose and translate legal documents in English.  The junior and senior years are aimed at improving  the students’ skills in translation, annotation and reviewing profession-specific texts.

Oral English enjoys a special educative place. Various methodical techniques are used, for instance, role-playing (topics: «Lawyer’s Study», «Detention of a suspect in a robbery», «Crime or unpleasant incident», «Evidence and Procedure», «Family drama», etc.) in which the students investigate imaginary crimes speaking English.

Collaborating with the other Departments of the Law School, our teachers become linguistic advisers of students who decided to write their theses in English.

The Department promotes international cooperation. Its representative bodies hold meetings, round tables and international conferences.  Students always take an part in these events and study hard to be able to communicate with native speakers. Students who have an advanced level in English can opt to undergo a training in European countries (Belgium, Spain, England, Montenegro) and in the USA.

Nowadays there is a great number of young people who need to know English for business communication. The communicative approach aims at the cultivation of possibility to speak in English in real situations. In classes our teachers create such situations, stimulating students to express their opinion about subjects, supporting the “teacher-student” and “student-student” interactions. As a result students can successfully cope that English situations present.
